Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito has announced that the Dominican Republic will be opening an investigation immediately about the capture of several members of the Usuga Clan in Colombia, headed by alleged drug trafficker Dairo Antonio Usuga (Otoniel), said to be the most wanted man in the country who has allegedly used a Dominican protestant church to launder money and an NGO to take his money out of the country. <\/p>\n
Speaking to Listin Diario, Dominguez Brito said that he has been in contact with Colombian authorities to obtain details of the case and asked his office’s anti-money laundering unit to handle it. <\/p>\n
The arrests by law enforcement authorities in connection with the case include Martha Cecilia Madrid, better known as the Boss, sister of Usaga’s girlfriend and who is believed to be in charge of changing drug money into luxury goods and properties in exclusive areas in both Colombia and the Dominican Republic. <\/p>\n
The Boss is said to have been in contact with the representative of a Dominican protestant church, making donations worth millions, which appear on paper as humanitarian support but have been used to buy homes, luxury vehicles and beach apartments. The authorities are offering a US$2 million for information about Usaga.<\/p>\n
According to the press, the results of the investigation led to the capture in Magangue, Bolivia, of Felix Mauricio Sierra Yepes, alias Felipe, who was the deputy leader of the Usuga clan. He is linked to at least 43 murders and attacks and is said to be responsible for 80% cases of extortion in several towns in Bolivia.<\/p>\n
Again, according to reports, the authorities will be charging a man known as Pastor Jorge, who is a church leader from the Dominican Republic who arrived in the Colombian town of Turbo, in the province of Antioquia to lead a religious sect as a cover for buying goods in Colombia using money from Usuga’s ventures. <\/p>\n
