{"id":66385,"date":"2015-05-19T01:43:56","date_gmt":"2015-05-19T01:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dr1.com\/new\/pages\/time-to-visit-the-zoo\/"},"modified":"2015-05-19T01:43:56","modified_gmt":"2015-05-19T01:43:56","slug":"time-to-visit-the-zoo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dr1.com\/news\/2015\/05\/19\/time-to-visit-the-zoo\/","title":{"rendered":"Time to visit the zoo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> Last year, the National Zoological Park in Santo Domingo received 217,197 visitors despite operating on what it calls a meager budget of RD$57 million.<\/p>\n<p> According to zoo director Patricia Toribio they have upgraded several areas, and she highlighted the improvements to the train that tours the park. <\/p>\n<p> The children&#8217;s area has also been improved along with the lion and tiger enclosure. They have also enlarged the area for rat breeding. The rats are fed to the animals as food. <\/p>\n<p> Toribio said that there were improved security measures with a new system of radios for the guards and a vehicle for the day patrols. <\/p>\n<p> The zoo has a collection of 1,036 animals including amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
