Columnist Ines Aizpun says that 40% of Dominicans are poor, and that 20% live in extreme poverty. She comments that problems like “the brain drain, garbage on the streets, slumification of the capital city, charcoal furnaces in the forests, driver unions and their control of transport, privatized and deteriorating beaches, low-quality education, wages that are too low… are not affected by whether there is re-election.” <\/p>\n
“We are poorer because politicians make us poor through their inefficient and self-interested management of the budget that is fed by our taxes. The problem is not re-election, it is – and has always been – corruption,” she concludes. <\/p>\n
