According to Spanish Road Safety Foundation (FESVIAL) president Luis Montoro, 130,000 people in Latin America and the Caribbean die in road traffic accidents every year. He said the Latin American and Caribbean average is seven times that in Europe. Speaking at the inauguration of a Road Safety Conference in Madrid, he said that the situation would only get worse if measures were not taken. He said the Inter-American Development Bank had suggested the worst forecast was that 450,000 would be dying in the same region in 2025. <\/p>\n
The conference is taking place in Madrid with delegates from Latin America, United States, Spain and Portugal. Montoro said that in Spain they had managed to reduce the number of road deaths from 9,344 in 1989 to 1,680 in 2014 and there was no reason why this could not be achieved in Latin America.<\/p>\n
