The president of the National Council of Business (Conep) Rafael Blanco Canto said on Wednesday, 24 June 2015 that the elections to be held on 15 May 2016 would be the most complex experienced by the country in the last 20 years. He added that for the elections to be considered legitimate and fair, the approval of the Bill of Electoral Guarantees, the Bill of Political Parties and the Bill of Fiscal Responsibility is required. “Without transparency in the financing of the political parties and their campaigns there cannot be real democracy because no one knows where the money to finance those campaigns is coming from,” said Rafael Blanco Canto. <\/p>\n
The Conep president was the speaker at the monthly luncheon held by the American Chamber of Commerce. <\/p>\n
Blanco Canto stressed the vigorous and sustained growth that the country has experienced during the last 50 years, recognizing that the country has the energy, the creativity, the talent, a culture of hard work and a vocation for entrepreneurship. He said these attributes, combined with a geo-graphically strategic position and vibrant natural and human resource bases means the country should advance even more and grow faster as a nation. However, despite these positive attributes and the millions of dollars that are invested both as direct foreign investment as by local investors, the country faces many challenges.<\/p>\n
In another part of his speech, Blanco Canto stated emphatically that the business sector is firmly convinced of the importance of having mechanisms that restrict changes of the Constitution. He also said that the fragmentation of the national territory is another major concern. This comment was apparently in reference to the recent constitutional reform approved by the National Assembly that would permit the reelection of the current President for another term as well as the alleged forthcoming creation of two new provinces in order to satisfy a political agreement with the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) whose legislators provided the needed votes for the presidential re-election change. <\/p>\n
