Farmers in the northwest of the country fear that the agricultural sector could soon face a labor shortage. The farmers anticipate that many Haitians farm workers who have registered under the National Foreigner Legalization Plan (PNRE) will migrate to large cities to look for better living conditions and higher wage jobs once the Dominican government issues the corresponding documents that will legalize their status in the country. <\/p>\n
Yunier Pena, who has a banana farm in Hatico de Mao, said that many Haitians who work in agriculture in the northwest region have told him that they plan to leave for Santiago once their petitions for work permits or residency are processed and approved.<\/p>\n
Cattle breeder Juan Fernandez said that three of his Haitian employees have already left after acquiring their documents, two workers headed to Santiago, while one laborer set out for Santo Domingo.<\/p>\n
The farmers expressed concern about addressing the labor shortage by recruiting undocumented Haitians as they don’t want to get into trouble with the Dominican authorities. <\/p>\n
