AES Dominicana, an affiliate of AES Corporation, announced the start of the liquid natural gas (LNG) trans-shipment and natural gas bunkering services for the Caribbean, Central and South America. The company is leveraging its world-class natural gas receiving and storage terminal and fuel handling capability in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n
“AES Dominicana aims to become a regional trans-shipment hub in order to provide cost effective energy solutions to fuel consumers in the Caribbean, Central and South America,” stated Edwin De Los Santos, president of AES Dominicana.<\/p>\n
In order to develop these new businesses, AES has brought in an expert in the industry, George Nemeth, a professional with more than a dozen years of experience working for ExxonMobil, Merrill Lynch Commodities and Koch Supply and Trading.<\/p>\n
Nemeth explained: “Work has begun to re-configure the existing AES Andres LNG receiving terminal in the Dominican Republic for LNG re-loads onto vessels between 10,000km-60,000 km.<\/p>\n
The strategic plan of the venture is that the combination of AES Dominicana’s ability to procure competitively priced LNG and the capability to deliver small loads of LNG allow for cost effective gas conversion solutions for smaller-load fuel consumers in the region.<\/p>\n
The facility is also ideally located along many shipping routes to provide LNG bunkering services to vessel owners and operators who are increasingly drawn to LNG as a propulsion fuel.”<\/p>\n
The AES Andres LNG terminal will be ready for re-load operations in the third quarter of 2016. Current developments for vessel bunkering infrastructure are also underway.<\/p>\n
In 2014, AES received 17 standard-sized cargos of LNG for electricity generation and truck distribution in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n
As reported, the use of LNG vs burning liquid fuel allows the Dominican Republic to save around US$600 million annually and to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 300,000 tons per year.<\/p>\n
