Scientists have now dated the fossilized remains of an extinct monkey that were discovered in an underwater cave in the eastern province of La Altagracia in 2009.<\/p>\n
Researchers discovered a shinbone embedded in limestone rock, belonging to the Hispaniola monkey, known as Antillothrix bernensis. The monkey was the size of a cat and was known to live in trees eating fruit and leaves. The monkey is thought to have become extinct in the 16th century <\/p>\n
Experts at Grand Valley State University in the US state of Michigan used a specialized technique to model the three-dimensional shape of the monkey’s leg bone and discovered that the bone was around a million years old.<\/p>\n
