According to the World Bank, the main obstacles to increasing Dominican exports include bureaucracy, phyto-sanitary problems and hindrances from customs and duties.<\/p>\n
The multilateral organization said it was committed to designing and implementing a strategic plan together with the Dominican Exporters’ Association (Adoexpo) to improve the situation. <\/p>\n
According to Adoexpo president Sadhala Khoury, the problem is that exports from the private sector are not planned, they do not focus on where the opportunities are, or where they can compete best. He said the government has to cut red tape.<\/p>\n
Khoury was speaking at a closed-door breakfast meeting chaired by Cecile Fruman, director of the Global Practice of Commerce and Competitiveness at the World Bank as well as Benjamin MacDonald, the World Bank representative in the DR. <\/p>\n
The meeting was also attended by other representatives of the country’s export and industrial sectors.<\/p>\n
