The Weather Office (Onamet) is instructing small and medium-sized boats to stay in port due to strong winds and high surf caused by hurricane Joaquin as it makes its way northwards. Onamet is also advising a stop to all water sports on the north coast. However, Onamet indicates that conditions should be back to normal by the weekend (3-4 October 2015) with some scattered showers, especially in the north, northeast, central mountain range and border with Haiti. <\/p>\n
Scattered showers are forecast nationwide today, Friday 2 October 2015, especially from the central valley region to the western part of the country from the southwestern province of Peravia (Bani) to the northwestern province of Montecristi as a consequence of hurricane Joaquin. Dry conditions are forecast for the east. <\/p>\n
In its Friday, 2 October 2015 morning forecast, Onamet said that hurricane Joaquin was 80 km south of the Bahamas but was moving at 6kph with sustained maximum winds of 215kph, making it a category 4 storm. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) has issued a high surf warning for Dominican coasts from Cabo Engano in the east to Manzanillo in the northwest. <\/p>\n
