The Puerto Plata Tourist Cluster estimates that the tourists who arrived on the Carnival Victory cruise ship that docked in the new Amber Cove port on Tuesday, 6 October 2015, spent approximately US$100,000 in Puerto Plata during their eight-hour stay. The ship has capacity for 2,750 passengers and 1,100 crew. <\/p>\n
Cluster president Maximo Iglesias and vice president Jose Natalio Redondo told Diario Libre they had reports that at 10am 98% of city center restaurants were filled with cruise ship tourists.<\/p>\n
Throughout the city the visitors were welcomed with music, the local folk dance group and artisans selling their wares. <\/p>\n
Deputy minister of tourism Julio Almonte reported that the visitors were offered 44 excursions to several places in the province of Puerto Plata and even Santiago. A second ship is scheduled to arrive next Thursday, 15 October 2015 with some 4,000 passengers on board. This will be followed by five ships in November.<\/p>\n
