According to the Minister of Public Works, Gonzalo Castillo, President Danilo Medina has ordered a feasibility study of the use of concrete to build the country’s roads.<\/p>\n
The reason behind the study is that concrete is now cheaper than asphalt, and lasts longer as well as needing less maintenance. In addition, cement is produced in the country.<\/p>\n
During a press conference yesterday, Monday 7 December 2015, Castillo outlined the growth of the cement sector and said that if the roads were well designed and constructed there should be no problem building them with cement.<\/p>\n
Dominican Cement Producers (ADOCEM) president Gabriel Ballestas said that cement consumption had grown 53% of the last three years, which was unprecedented in the region, only exceeded by Panama. He pointed out that the increase was due to the government school and housing construction programs. <\/p>\n
He went on to say that in 2012, local demand was 2.6 million tons, rising to four million in 2015, with an additional 1.6 million tons exported.<\/p>\n
