The National Business Council (Conep) and the Bosses Confederation of the Dominican Republic (Copardom) are calling for “obsolete” labor code to be modified, on the grounds that it allows for the existence of “mafias” of lawyers that promote fraudulent labor cases against companies. The business organizations say the legal actions affect the country’s productive sector and its image. They said that they have affected the construction, tourism sector and industries and other businesses around the country, according to Copardom president Joel Santos. <\/p>\n
The Conep called for addressing the structural problems that hinder economic growth. “The rules in the 1992-dated Labor Code respond to a different reality and now serve the vandalistic actions by lawyers who create fictitious situations to sue employers or purchase these cases from supposed employees for their personal benefit,” said the leading private sector association.<\/p>\n
The business associations are referring to complaints placed by the Dominican Housing Promoters and Builders Association (Acoprovi) and the Dominican Chamber of Construction (Cadocon), which claim that 80% of construction companies have been affected by fraudulent labor suits at a high cost for their operations. <\/p>\n
To prevent losses, several companies are now relying on labor code specialists to avoid falling prey to the lawyer “mafias”. <\/p>\n
