If the results stand as they are in terms of percentage, President Danilo Medina will be the first presidential candidate to receive over 60% of the votes in an election over the past two decades, and especially notable for a candidate seeking re-election when a president’s popularity often declines. <\/p>\n
The results of the fifth bulletin issued by the JCE yesterday, Monday 16 May 2016 give Medina 61.57% with 1,886,610 votes, and Luis Abinader, his main rival from the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and allies, 35.37% has 1,083,965 votes.<\/p>\n
In 2012, Medina, with the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and allies won the elections in the first round with 51.21% followed by the PRD and allies with 46.95%.<\/p>\n
In 2008, Leonel Fernandez achieved 53.83% and Miguel Vargas, 40.48%.<\/p>\n
In 2004, Fernandez achieved 57.11% and Hipolito Mejia 33.65%. <\/p>\n
In 2000, Mejia reached 49.86 and even though he did not exceed 50% he was declared the winner as Danilo Medina was so far behind with only 24.60%.<\/p>\n
1996 in the second round Leonel Fernandez had 51%. <\/p>\n
The JCE says 72% of those registered to vote did so. <\/p>\n
