A shootout occurred at the Municipal Electoral Board in Santo Domingo North yesterday morning, Monday 23 May 2016, reportedly between followers of the mayor, Francisco Fernandez, who is asking for a recount of the votes, and the police. <\/p>\n
The protesters burned tires, blocked traffic and threw tear gas bombs, which led to the standoff between the two sides. Businesses were closed and people left the area.<\/p>\n
Unrest continues in several parts of the country with protests in Tamboril, Paraiso in the south, a march in Higuey and requests from Santo Domingo East and West for a repeat of the elections. <\/p>\n
As of Sunday, 22 May 2016, a week after the general election was held on 15 May 2016, the JCE had still not posted the final election results. Bulletin 11 issued on Sunday evening showed that 97.86 % of the presidential election vote had been completed; 88.67% of the legislative and 94.21% of the municipal vote count. Major technical flaws have tainted the vote count technology contracted by the JCE at a cost of US$31 million. The opposition has been reporting fraud and serious irregularities.<\/p>\n
