President Danilo Medina made a surprise visit to Hondo Valle in Elias Pina province on the border with Haiti and emphasized the need for a concerted effort to reforest the region. <\/p>\n
The President named a committee to draft the reforestation plan. The committee includes Agriculture Minister Angel Estevez; the director of the Dominican Agrarian Institute, Emilio Toribio; the director of the Agriculture Bank, Carlos Segura Foster; Senator Adriano Sanchez, the provincial governor and a member of the Agriculture Cooperative, Love for Life and the Association of managers of Hondo Valle.<\/p>\n
The President proposed that the committee look into the feasibility to plant avocado and other fruit trees as well as coffee in the region. Medina emphasized the need to conduct a study to see if it was environmentally sound to grow such dual use trees in the area.<\/p>\n
The President was accompanied on the trip by the Administrative Minister of the Presidency, Jose Ramon Peralta; Public Works Minister, Gonzalo Castillo; Agriculture Minister Angel Estevez, and others.<\/p>\n
