The investigations began once the US Justice announced publicly that Odebrecht had secured contracts through illicit payments to government officials. Previously, a case that would have looked into corruption at the Ministry of Public Works under D\u00edaz R\u00faa failed to move in the Dominican judiciary and was eventually closed.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the contracts carried out by Odebrecht in the Dominican Republic were signed during the governments of former President Leonel Fern\u00e1ndez (2004-2008 and 2008-2016).
