Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso has reacted to Otto Reich’s description of the DR as a leftist country.<\/p>\n
He said the statement was unfortunate and not representative of the U.S. government’s official position. He told Listin Diario that there are still people that see leftism “even in their soup”.<\/p>\n
Hoy newspaper quotes Morales calling the statement rubbish and behind the times. Morales said that definitions of left and right have disappeared as a result of globalization. He said that the former deputy secretary of state is using 25 or 30-year old political rhetoric.<\/p>\n
Known internationally as an anti-Castro fanatic, Reich was appointed assistant secretary of state for hemispheric affairs by President Bush but never confirmed by the US Congress.<\/p>\n
Reich had said that the US needs to break up the Cuban-Venezuela axis because it endangers the stability of the region at a time when leftist governments like that of the Dominican Republic are coming to power.<\/p>\n
