Dominican Ambassador to the US, Flavio Dario Espinal agrees that the country must make the institutional changes necessary for the DR-CAFTA agreement to come into effect, as reported in El Caribe. These changes, says Espinal, include customs administration and governmental purchasing, and must be seen as an opportunity or incentive to continue consolidating transparency and the rule of law. Espinal was the guest speaker of the American Chamber of Commerce of the DR (AMCHAM) where he analyzed the challenges and opportunities for Dominican-American relations.<\/p>\n
Espinal also stated in his speech that since 2000, the US has deported 15,040 Dominicans, 80% of whom are classified as criminals by the US Office of Immigration Statistics. Ambassador Espinal also spoke about the situation in Haiti, which cannot be overlooked because the collapse of order in that country allows it to be used for the trafficking of drugs, arms, and illegal aliens to the US.
