The early 20th century were days of prosperity for Puerto Plata, when the city was the main port
of entry for goods bound for the inner Cibao provinces. Immigrants from the southern United
States, Europe and the Caribbean islands were attracted by the North Coast city’s natural beauty,
hospitality and its cultural multiplicity. The wave of immigrants left its mark in the Victorian houses
of Puerto Plata and the elegant attire worn by city dwellers of all ages when posing for posterity.
