Shopping plazas outside of the hotels
also dot the main roads, with the largest
collection of shops found in the Bávaro, El
Cortecito and Punta Cana areas. Several large
gift shops, catering to the excursion groups
line the entrance into the city of Higuey from
the East. The largest area shopping center
is centrally located in the new Palma Real
Village shopping center near the Cocotal Golf
Course and the Paradisus Punta Cana, and
Melia Tropical Caribe hotels.
Meetings
Punta Cana features the largest and most
modern meeting facilities at the Barceló
Bávaro Convention Center. Hotels in the area
feature smaller facilities for meetings and
conventions.
Nightlife
Most area resorts feature small, onsite
casinos and show areas or nightclubs or
discos that cater exclusively to their guests. In
many cases, public access to the resorts for
the day/evening is available for a fee. Several discos at the hotels are open to the
general public (tourists, hotel guests and local
employees). These are Pacha Discotheque (at
Riu Hotels), Areito (Hodelpa Resorts), and the
Mangú Discotheque (Occidental Flamenco
Hotel) with its giant screen for following
important spectator sports events. Opening
in 2007 is the Hard Rock Café at the Palma
Real Village Shopping Center. In front of the
Bávaro Princess, Tower Princess Casino is the largest in the east coastline, and offers free
access to the general public.
