7.7% increase in travelers for January 2016
The Central Bank reports that in January 2016 there were 36,995 more arrivals than in January 2015. A total of 519,977 non-resident visitors arrived, with 89.5% foreigners and 10.5% non-resident Dominicans. This is a 7.7% increase over non-resident arrivals for the same month in 2015.
Foreigners increased 6.7%, with 465,229 arrivals. The Central Bank attributes the sustained growth in travel arrivals to the steady US economy and the Ministry of Tourism's promotional campaigns. The DR is the most visited Caribbean island. 58% of tourists to the Dominican Republic come from North America (US, Canada and Mexico), mainly from the United States. Tourists from Europe make up 25.1% of non-resident arrivals and South America 14.1%.
Travel in January to the DR has increased consistently over the past three years:

Carnival time in the Dominican Republic
Every Sunday in February is carnival time in the Dominican Republic with the main carnival parade along the Santo Domingo Malecon on Sunday, 6 March 2016 with the best troupes from all the country's carnivals.
The Santo Domingo East carnival, organized by the Santo Domingo East Municipal Council, takes place along Avenida Espana on Sunday 22 February from 2pm. Salsa musician Yiyo Sarante and urban musician Mozart la Para will be headlining the free concert on Sunday, 22 February.
The country's biggest carnival parade will be held in Santo Domingo on Sunday, 6 March 2016 with the country's best carnival troupes coming together for an afternoon-long parade along the Malecon.
Santo Domingo is celebrating its own carnival on Av. Maximo Gomez on 21 and 28 February 2016 at 4pm, organized by the National District city government with a long list of musical entertainers.
Most outstanding and colorful, nevertheless, are the carnivals in the cities of La Vega, Bonao and Santiago every Sunday in February.
Cisneros Group announces Four Seasons for Miches
The newest destination under development on the east coast, Miches could get its start with the construction of a luxury Four Seasons hotel as part of developments at Tropicalia, the Cisneros Real Estate division has announced on their website. Tropicalia is a master-planned resort development covering an area of 2,400 hectares or 6,000 acres of land north of Punta Cana.
The group has announced that Tropicalia's first hotel with an Isay Weinfeld-designed Four Seasons besides a Tom Doak golf course will open in 2016.
Miches is now easily accessible from Punta Cana via the extension of the east coast tourist highway.
Air Century flies to Haiti
Air Century, which operates out of the La Isabela International Airport in northern Santo Domingo announced the start of scheduled flights to Port-au-Prince on 15 February 2016.
Operations are on board a combination of Saab 340B and/or Jetstream 31/32 turboprop aircraft. The Dominican charter specialist also operates a Gulfstream IIB and a Cessna Citation 550 executive jet.
350,000 cruise passengers expected at Amber Cove
Carnival Corporation group's vice president, development & operations, global port & destination development, David Candib has announced that they expect to receive some 350,000 cruise passengers during 2016 at the Amber Cove Cruise Center port in Maimon, Puerto Plata that began operations in October 2015. He announced that eight cruise lines would be bringing tourists from countries including Germany, the UK, the US and Italy.
Amber Cove is prepared to receive 8,000 cruise passengers and 2,000 crew members at the same time. Candib said the US$90 million investment is the largest that Carnival has made in a port center.
Speaking at a recent National Shippers Association (ANRD) luncheon event, he said that in the next two to five years that number should increase to between 500,000 and one million visitors for Puerto Plata.
Last year, 549,950 passengers visited the Dominican Republic's cruise terminals in Santo Domingo, La Romana, Samana and now Puerto Plata, according to Ministry of Tourism data.
