Mayor objects to budget cuts

Santo Domingo’s mayor says he will not heed Law 163 that divides the National District by creating the province of Santo Domingo. He told the Listin Diario that he was elected for four years to manage the National District without divisions and with a monthly budget of approximately RD$65 million. Under the division, his responsibilities and his budget would be considerably reduced. He said his term ends 16 August 2002. He said he was entrusted until then with the concerns of 2.2 million people (as of the census of 1993) in an area of 1,380 square kilometres.
