Air marshals on flights to and from US

Diario Libre reports that US airlines are now flying with Federal Air Marshals (FAMs) on board. The new security agents are trained to respond to criminal acts as well as other in-flight emergencies. FAMs are authorized to carry firearms and make arrests while preserving the safety of aircraft, crew, and passengers. The newspaper says the airlines have also installed modern closed-circuit television systems so the movement of passengers can be monitored from the cockpit. The measures come as a response to the 11 September terrorist attacks. (8 November 2001)
