As of this weekend, the Ministry of Public Works is charging tolls to those making their way out of Santo Domingo. The plan is to decongest the highways and allow a freer flow of traffic. Travelers using the eastbound Las Americas, the northbound Duarte Highway and the westbound 6 de Noviembre will now pay RD$30 in one shot. Upon returning to the city, the toll gates will be open. The same rates will apply for all vehicles. The toll went into effect on Sunday, catching many drivers unawares and causing considerable traffic jams. Drivers need to wait five seconds, up from two seconds in the past, for the traffic bar to lift once the six coins (RD$5 x 6) are thrown in the bin.
