The Dominican Winter League continued to face a different set of problems last night, but the one bright spot was the excellent showing by the Tigres del Licey in San Francisco de Macoris. Licey beat the hometown Gigantes by a score of 4-0, in large part thanks to the excellent pitching of Manny Aybar who allowed just one hit and struck out seven in just five and two-thirds innings. The four relief pitchers for Licey did not allow a single hit and the Gigantes were totally frustrated by 12 strikeouts as they tried to win their home opener of the Round Robin tournament. Only two Gigante players even reached second base. Licey scored the winning run in the first inning with Timo Perez getting a base on balls, an infield hit by Ronnie Belliard, a passed ball and a fielder’s choice by Jose Guillen.
In San Pedro de Macoris, a series of blackouts interrupted the game between the Aguilas Cibaenas and the Estrellas Orientales in the fourth inning. The game, turning ugly because of fan protests, was 8-0 in favor of the Aguilas. The game will be restarted at a latter date. A first Aguilas vs. Licey game scheduled for 2 January at the Cibao stadium had to be suspended for rain.
