Spirit Airlines, which seeks to become the leading low-cost carrier to the Caribbean, recently announced the start of its new service to Punta Cana from Fort Lauderdale. The service begins on 10 December and brings low-cost fares to Punta Cana from the southern United States. Spirit is promising to maintain the lowest rates for the Florida connection. The Punta Cana flight comes exactly one year after the airline began flying from Fort Lauderdale to Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo.
This summer, Punta Cana was the sixth most popular international destination for US travelers, according to a survey carried out by the American Society of Travel Agents.
As of this winter, the area is being served by several major US carriers, including American, United, Delta and US Airways, from different points in the US.
