Dominican mayor of Providence, RI

Lawyer Angel Taveras was officially confirmed as the Mayor of Providence, becoming the first Hispanic mayor of the capital of Rhode Island. He had won the primaries by a wide margin in September and swept the general election with an 82% plurality. In his swearing-in ceremony he said that his three main objectives for this term are to adjust the budget, make the city’s economy grow and convert the schools into the best in Rhode Island. The Rhode Island state legislature also has eight Hispanic members, and the New York state legislature has two Dominican senators and two Puerto Rican senators.
