Obesity becoming a problem

A recent study reveals that 8% of the 2.6 million Dominican elementary and high school students are obese. The Ministry of Public Health report says this is an increase over the 5% reported in the 1990s. The obesity problem is attributed to a lack of nutrients in the foods consumed by the students. Matilde Vasquez, deputy Minister of Public Health in the area of nutrition, urged parents to encourage their children to eat healthy foods, more fruits and vegetables, and foods with a high content of fiber and nutrients.
