Constitutional Court ruling: DR at a disadvantage

Minister of Foreign Relations Carlos Morales Troncoso’s absence of more than three months for health reasons and adverse international reactions to the Constitutional Court ruling on nationality is putting the Dominican Republic at a disadvantage when it comes to foreign policy, reports Diario Libre. In its analysis today, Friday 27 December the newspaper comments that the Ministry has played a timid role on the defensive from international organizations and governments that accuse the Dominican Republic of violating the rights of Haitian immigrants and their descendants. The Minister has been on leave of absence since September when the Ministry of Foreign Relations reported he was traveling to the US for medical treatment for leukemia. Acting Minister Jose Manuel Trullols has been in charge of the Ministry. As a result, the Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo has taken on the role of Minister of Foreign Relations on several occasions.
