Dominican ballplayer David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox joined the prestigious 500 home run club on Saturday, 12 September 2015. He is only the fourth player in Boston Red Sox history and the 27th in Major League Baseball history to reach this milestone.
The announcement coincides with Ortiz’s invitation to all his friends to play in his annual David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic in Punta Cana, from 3-6 December 2015.
This year, the four-day event is held in partnership with Mass General Hospital for Children and the World Pediatric Project.
The annual golf classic raises funds for the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, which provides critical pediatric healthcare to children in New England and the Dominican Republic. Since its inception, the popular event has raised more than US$2 million and has attracted many of Ortiz’ celebrity friends and athletes along with past and present teammates.
The charity event is based at the Sanctuary Hotel Cap Cana in Punta Cana and packages pair up participants with a celebrity captain to enjoy some eight oceanfront holes on the Jack Nicklaus Punta Espada Signature Golf Course in Cap Cana.
The event is promoted as a way for sports aficionados and fans in Red Sox Nation to travel Big Papi style to escape the Boston winter for a few days to meet the legendary player.
