21% of the births at the Vinicio Calventi public hospital in northern Santo Domingo are to teenagers, ages 14 to 17 years, as reported in El Nacional.
He said the number of births is down from 38% from last year. Calventi attributed the decline to the public awareness efforts in the Los Alcarrizos area that have been carried out in the past two years. Dr. Marcelo Puello, director of the hospital, said that teenage births are the main cause of infant mortality in the country, when interviewed by journalist Johanna Parra for “Detalle Semanal”.
He explained gynecology and orthopedics (due to the treatment of victims of traffic accidents) are the most active sections at the hospital.
