The Ministry of Public Health again is recommending couples to postpone pregnancy until the peak of the Zika virus outbreak passes. The Ministry has already reported the first microcephaly in a recent birth. Zika is linked to microcephaly in newborns. Dr. Mercedes Rodriguez Silver, deputy minister for Collective Health, said avoiding pregnancies is the most effective way to not risk a baby being born with brain damage. The Ministry is reviewing the case of a baby born with microcephaly in Barahona that could be linked to Zika. If so, this would be the first case reported in the Dominican Republic. Zika has been present in the DR since January 2016.
