Big problems at brand new Punta Catalina power plant

The Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) confirmed on Tuesday, 23 June 2020 in the morning that Unit 2 of the Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Plant (CTPC) “was taken out of the system today, Tuesday, to change a rubber gasket that regulates gas and air control.”

Videos of heavy smoke at the power plant have been circulating on social networks from 8am. The CDEEE issued a statement saying that the unit was not on fire, that it was taken off the system by technicians to make corrections. According to the CDEEE notice, the corrections will take between three and four days, but power service should be restored by the weekend. The CDEE says that Unit 1 of Punta Catalina continues to operate, generating 360 megawatts.
