Dominican Republic – Coronavirus Covid-19: Bulletin #111/7 July 2020

According to Coronavirus Bulletin #111 of the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology, the Dominican Republic has 39,588 confirmed cases, including 1,158 new confirmed cases from 174,751 PCR diagnostic tests. The record high in new cases is the accumulated over the election day weekend. The number of PCR cases for the bulletin is 3,654.

The tally of deaths is now 829, including 8 new registered deaths. The daily average number of deaths for the past 14 days is 9.85.

As of Bulletin #111, 3,884 patients are hospitalized. Of these, 216 patients are in intensive care units. The fatality rate, the number of reported deaths per number of confirmed cases, continues to decline with the increase in testing. It is now at 2.09% per million inhabitants. Positivity rate over the past four weeks has increased to 24.49%.

The average testing over the past 14 days has dropped to 2,930 PCR tests. The statistical reports do not include rapid response blood antibody tests or patients diagnosed with tomography or other means. The Dominican Republic has a population of more than 10 million people.

As of Tuesday, 7 July 2020 at 4pm, the most confirmed cases continue to be reported in urban areas where most of the tests are carried out. Santo Domingo province (13,346) and the National District (10,807) has 61% of cases, the result of 24,153 confirmed cases and 39,588 total confirmed cases. Santiago (3,066), San Cristobal (2,166), La Vega (1,491), La Altagracia (1,020), La Romana (989), Duarte (958), Espaillat (838), Azua (756), Barahona (647), and Puerto Plata (616) are other provinces that have 500 or more accumulated cases.

The most new cases or recently allocated cases are reported for the 5 July deadline are: the National District (378), Santo Domingo province (252), Santiago (221), La Vega (53), Puerto Plata (31), La Altagracia (31), La Romana (30), Azua (26), San Cristóbal (26), Independencia (20), San José de Ocoa (13), Sánchez Ramírez (10) and Espaillat (10). The Ministry of Public Health reports nine or less confirmed cases in 19 other provinces.

The number of recorded cases is dependent on the availability of PCR tests that continue to be scarce, especially in the provinces where test waiting lists are long.

Haiti reports 6,486 confirmed cases and 123 deaths, as of 7 July 2020.

In the Americas, the Dominican Republic is now ranked 12th in confirmed cases after the United States, Brazil, Peru, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Panama and Bolivia.
