The Ministry of Public Health sent 500 PCR test kits to the public hospital in Nagua, in the northeastern province of María Trinidad Sánchez, where there is an outbreak in Covid-19 infections. Recently, a local hospital carried out 100 tests and 90 came back positive. Public Health Minister Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas said in his press briefing on Tuesday, 4 August that the Ministry would make an intervention in the province. “With these new tests we will know the magnitude of the existing outbreak in Nagua,” he said.
Over the weekend, health authorities carried out 100 PCR tests, 45 of which were administered to health personnel at the Hospital Doctor Antonio Yaport Heded, with 42 positive results. The rest were administered to Nagua residents. Of 55 tests, 48 were diagnosed with the disease, but were all without symptoms.
Dr. Sánchez Cárdenas believes the high level of spread indicates that the hospital staff is failing to apply biosecurity measures.
The director of the hospital in Nagua, Dr. Enmanuel Oscar Pérez Cepeda, said that the center is now only open for treating Covid-19 patients.
