Coronavirus Covid-19: Bulletin #179/13 September 2020

Now under new authorities, the Ministry of Public Health’s Epidemiology Department Coronavirus Bulletin #179 has yet to get anywhere near its announced objective of 7,000 PCR tests per day. For Bulletin #179, 2,743 persons came out positive with their PCR test. This is below the past 14-day average of number of first PCR tests that is at 3,676 PCR tests.

The positivity rate over the past four weeks continues to gradually decline and is now at 26.53%. The 24-hour positivity rate for Bulletin #179 is 16.41%.

As per Bulletin #179, with the deadline of 13 September 2020, 450 new confirmed cases are reported. The Ministry of Public Health has registered 104,110 confirmed cases since the first case on 1 March 2020. The PCR testing is 40,395 tests per million inhabitants. The number of deaths is 1,984, including 16 new deaths reported in the past 24 hours of the bulletin. The fatality rate is 1.91% over the past four weeks.

The Ministry of Public Health is no longer giving the numbers of persons hospitalized. The report indicates that 27% of the total available hospital beds for Covid-19 patients are occupied, and 41% of the intensive care units for Covid-19.

Stats as of Bulletin #179 reveal that the average testing is at 3,676 PCR confirmed case tests. The new public authorities have committed to carry out 7,000 PCR tests per day. The tally of deaths is now 1,984, including 16 new reported deaths. Of these, three occurred in the past 24 hours and 13 from 6-12 September 2020.

The official cumulative incidence of the disease per 100,000 inhabitants as per confirmed PCR tests is highest in the National District and these top 10 provinces: National District (2,766), Pedernales (1,348), Santiago (1,119), La Altagracia (1,041), Sánchez Ramírez (1,126), La Vega (943), Duarte (858), Barahona (818), La Romana (797), Maria Trinidad Sánchez (788), Azua (784) and Santo Domingo province with 747 is in 12th place in the incidence of the disease per 100,000 inhabitants.

As of Sunday, 13 September 2020 at 6pm, the deadline for Bulletin #179, the most confirmed cases were located in urban areas where most of the tests are carried out. The National District (28,861) and the Santo Domingo province (21,726) are 50% of the 104,110 confirmed cases nationwide.

Other provinces with more than 500 confirmed cases are: Santiago (11,777), La Vega (3,880), San Cristobal (3,834), La Altagracia (3,684), Duarte (2,565), La Romana (2,175), Puerto Plata (1,958), Azua (1,743), San Juan de la Maguana (1,727), Espaillat (1,715), Sánchez Ramírez (1,562), Barahona (1,549), San Pedro de Macoris (1,513), Monseñor Nouel (1,202), Maria Trinidad Sanchez (1,112) and Peravia (1,096). The National District, province of Santo Domingo and these 16 provinces of 32 make up more than 90% of the confirmed cases nationwide.

Where and how much testing determines the reported new cases. Testing is still inconsistent. The most new allocated cases reported for the 12 September update deadline are: National District (84), Santiago (78), Santo Domingo (77), La Vega (34), Monseñor Nouel (24), Barahona (23), Puerto Plata (19), Sánchez Ramírez (18), Peravia (17), San Cristobal (14) and Espaillat (14).

Haiti reports 8,499 confirmed cases and 219 deaths, for the 13 September 2020 deadline.

In the Americas, the Dominican Republic is now ranked 11th in confirmed cases after the United States, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Canada, Bolivia and Ecuador.
