First Lady to head new Children’s Cabinet

President Luis Abinader announced the creating of a Children and Adolescent Cabinet presided by First Lady Raquel Arbaje. President Abinader spoke on Monday, 16 November 2020 from the Presidential Palace to announce the new cabinet and reiterate his support to the bill that bans girls under 18 from getting married. The Civil Code allows 15+ girls to get married with the approval of their parents and a judge. The exception has been criticized because it legitimizes child abuse.

The Chamber of Deputies announced it will session on Wednesday, 18 November 2020 to pass the bill. The bill then will go to the Senate for approval. The matter has more than 20 years being debated with no definite action taken. Now with the full-fledged support of President Luis Abinader, it looks like there is sufficient political will to ban child marriage. Alianza Pais deputy Jose Horacio Rodriguez presented the bill to ban child marriage in the Chamber of Deputies.
