First Lady Raquel Arbaje has begun work as president of the Children & Adolescent Cabinet. She is doing so on an honorary basis, in keeping with her commitment not to handle public funds.
She is coordinating the work of the National Council for Children and Adolescents (Conani), and the ministries of Women, Public Health, Education, Labor, Sports, Culture and Youth.
The Progresando con Solidaridad Program (ProSoli), the National Health Service (SNS), the National Institute of Integrated Care for Early Childhood (INAIPI), and the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic are also part of the new Children and Adolescent Cabinet.
One of the coordinating entity’s priorities is to ensure that actions target a reduction in the teenage pregnancy rate in the country. The Dominican Republic ranks first in Latin America and the Caribbean for child marriages and early marriages. Twelve percent of girls under the age of 15 have been victims of child marriage and early unions. In 2019, 24.5% of births were to mothers under 19.
