President suspends 36 officials for failing to provide sworn declaration of assets

For the first time in living memory, dozens of government officials of an administration have been suspended, without pay, for failing to provide their sworn declaration of assets. President Luis Abinader did just that late last week as he issued Decree 674-20, which calls for the strictest fulfillment of the strictures of ethics, transparency and good public administration, and suspended 36 of his people from their posts.

The director of the Ethics Agency, Milagros Ortiz Bosch was the carrier of the bad tidings, as she emphasized the government is demanding the fulfillment of the requirement in Law 311-14 on the National System of Authorized and Uniform Sworn Declarations of Assets for Public Servants. The law orders that government officials present their worth statements to the Chamber of Accounts within 30 days of taking a position.
