Jean Alain Rodríguez sent to Najayo; spotlight on bananas in safebox

Former Attorney General Jean Alain Rodríguez was sent to Najayo Jail during the early morning of 14 July 2021. The day before, he was sentenced to serve 18 months of pretrial custody in the San Cristóbal jail. The news became the trending topic for the day. People also referred to the case of the “plantains” found in a safe box that prosecutors opened as they sought evidence in the Medusa Operation, as the case against Rodríguez and accomplices has been named by the anti-administrative corruption prosecutors.

Prosecutors charge Rodriguez and accomplices of alleged corruption, fraud and erasing of would be incriminating evidence when he was attorney general from 2016 to 2020.

Another trending topic on social media was about plantains supposedly found in a safe opened by the anti-corruption prosecutors in their search for incriminating evidence. It is now known that plastic bananas were left in the safe opened by the anti-corruption prosecutors. Diario Libre reports that the incident served as “a last straw” and did not work in favor of Rodríguez’s defense that sought domiciliary arrest for their client. Rodríguez’s defense has announced they will appeal the pretrial custody order.
