North American Optimist Championship The Dominican sailing community is up to the challenge to present the IODA North American Optimist Championship from 30 June to 8 July in Boca Chica, the beach community east of Santo Domingo. Some 198 sailors from 23 countries around the world are expected for the event that gathers some of the best junior sailors (up to 15 years category) in the region. Eduardo Verdeja, president of the Dominian Optimist Association, heads the organizing committee. Participants are coming from the Netherlands Antilles, Argentina, Bermuda, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, France, Germany, Guatemala, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay, the United States, US Virgin Islands, and Venezuela. The members of the national team are: Erick Holmbom, Paloma Esteban, Eduardo Ariza, Rodrigo Delgado, Sebastian Bros, Justina Pacheco, Alina Nordbruch, Natali Nordbruch, Nicole Reitzel, Nicolas Moreno, Joan Mella and Paula Varona. Coaches are Rulo Borojovich and Jato Ocariz. The event is sponsored by the Dominican Optimist Association (ADO), the Dominican Sailing Federation (FDV) under the supervision of the International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA). Summer Jazz at Casa de Teatro Summer is special as Casa de Teatro welcomes leading jazz performers for its Annual Summer Jazz Festival, with Thursday performances. Performers are coming from Cuba, Argentina, the US, France, Spain and the best of the DR for the 10th year of the festival. Ballet Gala The National Theater will be presenting the World Gala of Dance on 3 and 4 July. This is a benefit for the Fundacion Nido para Angeles that works with children with brain paralysis. First ballerinas Michelle Jimenez and Jan Zerer of the Dutch Ballet will perform. Also, performing are dancers from the Munich Ballet and Brazilian dancer, Vitor Luiz, from Brazil. Vitor Luiz, who has danced with the Birmingham Royal Ballet before returning to Brazil will be joining the San Francisco Ballet as a principal dancer for the 2010 season. Also performing is Lorena Feijoo, a former prima ballerina of the National Ballet of Cuba, now performing with the San Francisco Ballet. Tickets: RD$1,200 and RD$800.

KPWT Kiteboard World Cup The Kiteboard Pro World Tour (KPWT) has included a stop in Cabarete, Puerto Plata on its schedule for the Official World Championship Tour 2009. Some of the best kiteboarders int he world will be in Cabarete to vie for the EUR15,000 prize for Freestyle kiteboarding. Cabarete is famous worldwide for its windsurfing, kiteboarding and laser sailing and has excellent conditions for wind and water sports. July is one of the ery best months to practice the sport on these beaches. The World Cup will be part of the Cabarete Summer Fest set for that week. During that event, there will be competitions in skateboarding, art and photography and music presentations.

Comedy at the National Theater The Enrique Chao comedy, "Prohibido seducir a los casados," (A Ban on Seducing Married People) opens at the National Theater's main hall on 17 July. It is an Enrique Chao production, tarring Cuquin Victoria, Fausto Mata, Edili, Maria del Carmen Hernandez and Hony Estrella. Concert for Los Haitises More than 20 musical performers are coming together for a concert in support of the preservation of Los Haitises, the singular karst region in northeastern DR, considered the main source of water for the south and eastern regions. The event is scheduled for Sunday, 19 July starting at 4pm at Plaza de Espana, in Santo Domingo's Colonial City. Several young composers are writing lyrics and music especially for the event. They join the grassroots movements campaigning to convince the Dominican Mining Consortium to relocate its cement plant to a less vulnerable location. Calor Urbano, Marel Alemany, Janio Lora, Pavel Nunez, Gnomico, Pablo Cavallo, Victor Victor, Son Abril, Grado Celcius, Cayhao, Sociedad Tabu, Juango Davalos, Diego Mena, Nelson Poket, Xiomara Fortuna, Marte o Venus, Tony Almont and DJ Visionario are among the participants who have signed up to join their voices to raise awareness about the threat posed by the construction of the cement plant to the district of Gonzalo, in the province of Monte Plata. Cabarete Classic New this year in the Cabarete Classic, the leading windsurfing event, is an additional long distance event and the Butterfly Effect. The event will last from 22 July to 26 July 2009. The 2009 Cabarete Classic will take place on Cabarete Beach in front of Vela Resorts in the center of town. The Cabarete Classic is a four-day long event offering racing and freestyle categories for competitors of all ages and abilities. The new Butterfly Effect, which will be held on July 22, is a non-competitive event promoting women and ocean sports. Central American and Caribbean Car Racing Championship The final race of the annual Central American and Caribbean Car Racing Championship will be held at the Mobil 1 Race Track in Santo Domingo. Races will be in the GT1 (3601 cc to 6500 cc), GT2 (2001 to 3600cc) and GT3 (1 to 2000c) categories. The DR will be represented by Jacinto Peynado, Luis Mendez, Luis Tomas Mendez, Manen Mendez, Tony Canahuate, Mandy Gonzalez and R J Lopez. National Visual Arts Bienal This year the 25th Biennial of the Arts will be dedicated to painter Ramon Oviedo on the occasion of his 85th birthday. The Biennial opens at the Museum of Modern Art at the Plaza de la Cultura on 16 August. It brings together a collective exhibition of some of the best in painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, multimedia, ceramics, visual plastic arts, performances and installations. Winners will be awarded an overall prize of RD$500,000 and RD$250,000 first prize per category. The event is open to all Dominican artists and foreign artists who have resided in the country for at least five years. The event is being organized by the Ministry of Culture.
