The following listing should help our readers begin their search for good health care in the Dominican Republic. All of those listed speak English; some speak French or German as well. These people have been recommended from a variety of sources.
It is advisable to telephone ahead before visiting a doctor’s office, as it may be necessary to make an appointment, either for a specific hour or day. In the latter case, all patients who have appointments for that day will be seen in order of arrival. Some doctors accept patients on a first come-first served basis, in which case an appointment is not necessary. Note that regardless of whether you have an appointment, it is recommended to call prior to leaving for the doctor’s office to confirm the physician is not out on an emergency call.
Remember that prices vary greatly. You may want to confirm the cost of a first visit by telephone before making your appointment.
Doctors can be difficult to reach at times. Many work in several locations, including government subsidized hospitals, or teach medicine at a university. The best times to telephone are 10 am or 4 pm. Be persistent and vary the time of your calls to successfully locate the doctor or office staff.
