Footwear is of utmost importance for making the hike. Shoes must be rugged enough to negotiate the rocks, but shouldn’t weigh you down when you jump into a fall. Deck shoes work well, as do sturdy hiking sandals. Your guide will assist you in carrying your valuables, although the less you bring the better. Definitely avoid bringing items that shouldn’t get wet.

It is recommended that you pack a snack, but be sure it is lightweight and be sure not to leave your garbage behind. Consider plastic zip-lock bags for things that you do not want to get wet. A tightly-sealed thermos could serve to pack your camera, inside a zip-lock bag for extra protection. They can be purchased at most Puerto Plata supermarkets, in case you have not brought your own.

This trip is best made on a weekday to avoid the crowds of locals who flock to the first waterhole on a hot summer’s day.

The Damajagua Falls excursion is the kind of natural adventure that will leave you with a sense of triumph. Your sense of accomplishment will make you feel as though you have conquered your fears in the real world.
