excursions / excursiones

Supertobo water slide.

Located north of the Bi2JH20 (Bibijagua) arts and crafts plaza in Bavaro: for US$5, a child can slide down three times.

Beach buggy & quad adventures

Macao beach territory, to the north of most Punta Cana resorts, is chosen for the many beach buggy, quad adventure (4 wheel ATV motorbikes) and other off-road excursions that put the tourist behind the wheel. The beach buggy open-chassis light vehicle provides the smoothest ride of those that take you inland through rugged territory, with time for riding waves and racing across the sands of the expansive Macao beach. These thrilling rides through Macao will not last much longer as hotels are due to be built in this area. Recommended for the young at heart, especially teenagers. Excursions may include time for horseback riding. Hat, protective eyeglasses and socks are recommended for the quad rides. Half-day excursion.

Inland safaris

Jeep, truck and 8-wheel military truck in-country safari tours are offered at all resort hotels due to their popularity with the tourists. These high vehicles facilitate moving inland across rivers and rough terrain. There are different itineraries, but the excursions may take tourists through jungle terrain, a sugar cane plantation, for a refreshing swim in a river or unexploited beach, to enjoy a Dominican food buffet, "perico ripiao" typical music, and visit to a small village with a stopover at the local "colmado" (grocery store) and inside peek into a country home for a cup of home-brewed coffee. All-day activity.

Punta Cana Ecological Reserve.

Trails that meander through tropical forest settings where visitors can see a sample of local biodiversity in living displays featuring bird and insect life. The Indian Eyes Park culminates in a cooling dip in one or more of the different 11 lagoons after winding through deep green tunnels of over 500 species of exotic plants. Guided tours are US$10 but they need to be booked with the reserve. Located 10 minutes east of the Punta Cana International Airport. Half-day activity.

Horseback riding excursions

Several hotels feature horseback riding excursions taking tourists into the hillside and to seldom-visited beaches. For visitors in the Punta Cana area, some of the better cared for horses can be found at the Punta Cana Equestrian Center, 15 minutes from the Punta Cana International Airport, which is open for excursions to the general public. Half-day activity.

Manati Park

One of the pioneers in excursions in the area, this park features animal shows and insights into Dominican culture, folklore and the artistry of the Taino Indians, the island's inhabitants at the time of the Spanish conquest. Half-day excursion.

Helicopter tour

The quickest way to get a feeling of what Punta Cana is all about is to take the 10, 15, 20 or 30- minute standard beach flights on board a helicopter.

Whale-watching

From January through March, this full-day excursion is offered to watch the giant humpback whales as they frolic in and out of the Atlantic Ocean, along the coastline of Samana province. Options offered include a helicopter ride, a plane ride or a bus ride to Sabana de la Mar. This trip is best enjoyed when overnighting in Samana. The excursions usually include a stopover at Cayo Levantado Island.

Los Haitises National Park

All-day excursion to Sabana de la Mar, from where a boat trip is taken to visit Los Haitises National Park with its many mangroves, hill and caves. Excursions often include lunch at the Cano Hondo riverside restaurant. All-day activity.

Fun Fun Cave

Rappel down into a cave and walk along sections of its underground caverns joined by a 7-km long subterranean river. This excursion to Rancho Capote includes horseback riding and lunch at an orange farm. An all-day excursion.

Ocean World Park

Located in Puerto Plata, this park features the best facilities for dolphin encounters in the country. Since Puerto Plata is an eight-hour drive from Punta Cana, this excursion is only offered to visitors who can take the one-hour flight into the area. All-day activity.
