    Cedula ??

Plan is to pick up my new (renewed) resident card on Monday. Is there really any need to get the new cedula ? My old resident card and cedula both had the same number, picture, address etc. Since I can't vote anyway what need for what is essentially a voter ID card.

    Ocean World ?

Haven't seen anything about Ocean World here lately. Daughter wants to go in a couple weeks for her 10th birthday. Web site makes it look like Dominicans and residents get in for half price with cedula. We would be coming up from the capitol. Any good reasons not to make the trip. We would...

    Matancitas questions

We go to Las Terrenas for the occasional weekend getaway from the capitol but with the new highway and more flights going into the airport up there it seems like the place is beginning to get too busy and crowded these days. Looking at the map it looks like Matancitas just to the east of Nagua...

Tourist Destinations That Are More Dangerous Than You Think

Maybe slightly off topic but when I turn on my computer the yahoo home page pops up. Right at the top, today, is an article about dangerous places for tourists to visit and the D.R. leads the list. The article claims 39 tourists murdered in the last three years. I'm sure Carnival wants to be...

Sending a small package to D.R.

Daughter is in Santo Domingo for semana Santa. She left her prescription glasses in Boston. Is there a good and quick way to get them delivered to Santo Domingo? Or best to live without and just wait till she goes back north in a couple weeks?

    Monte Alto Coffee ?

I am, by no means, a coffee connoisseur though I did really enjoy the Olivo family coffee that I was able to score a while back. For every day use I like to drink a 50/50 mix of Santo Domingo and the darker Monte Alto ground coffee. The Santo Domingo is available everywhere but it has been a...

    D.R. exports to Russia

From news update: The new opportunity for DR produce opened up after a trade embargo was imposed on Russia over its policy in the Ukraine. The whole idea behind the embargos was to punish Russia for their lethal behavior in Ukraine. Anyone else think this is a kind of underhanded way for the...

    New tack

Is there any valid reason for getting the new cedula now (other than the late fee). I have a perfectly good permanent resident card that is valid for more than another year. My resident card has the same number and address and vital information as the cedula. The only difference is the color...

    Cedula renewal ?

My cedula and residency card have the same expiration date in 2016. Since the numbers are the same for both cards and obviously the pictures and info are the same, is there any need for me to get one of the new cedulas now? I can't vote in this country anyway and can't think of anything that the...

    Subjective opinion ? ?

Just today I received an email from our fine new U.S. ambassador informing me that the Dominican Republic was becoming a particularly dangerous place for us ex-pats and then a short time later I was reading in the news that La Romana was now considered one of the ten most dangerous cruise ship...

    Demonstration ? ? ?

Got a notice from the U.S. Embassy to stay away from the area this morning because of a demonstration. Anyone know why?

    Tall Ships

I posted this in the Santo Domingo page but thought it should get wider coverage. The tall ships are in Santo Domingo now tied up just down stream from the floating bridge down to where the ferry to Puerto Rico docks. There were five this evening and they are very impressive. Free to look at...

    An interesting statistic

Over the Easter weekend there were twenty five people killed in the Dominican Republic. Over the Easter weekend there were forty five people shot in Chicago alone. Chicago and Santo Domingo have roughly equal populations. I'm headed to Santo Domingo tonight where I'll be safer than in my own...

South Coast or Santo Domingo thread?

In the olden days at Boca Chica the expats I used to hang with (many no longer with us) used to be found at Ronnies Beach House Bar. After a while they migrated east to Playa Vista. Now they're even further east at The Boat House. Are there any expat hangouts (mostly U.S. or Canadian) like that...

    Deadly driving

I read this morning that the D.R. has dropped to number nine in the list of most likely countries in which you are likely to die in a traffic crash. The only other country in the western hemisphere to make the top (bottom) ten was Venezuela.

    JetBlue problems ? ?

A friend from near Boston emailed that there was a riot at the JetBlue ticket counter in SDQ. I can't find any info down here but I see the airline isn't selling any seats this week on their nonstop from here to Boston. I just assumed they were sold out. Maybe something more serious? ?

    Rancho Platon

Wife wants to visit Rancho Platon in Barahona after hearing a good report about it from a friend. A quick search on DR1 turns up nothing. I have a couple questions. First, obviously, does anyone, who has been there, have anything to say about the place? And second, can we reach it with our Mazda...

    water park

We've heard lots of different stories about Los Delfines, the new water park near Juan Dolio. The consensus seems to be that it's expensive (U$50) per person and not all that great. Since we live in Santo Domingo, I'm thinking we can save the drive and have just as much fun at less cost at the...

    It's taking a long time

Several years ago I had the Guzman firm handle my request for residency. The process was straight foreward, not very time consuming and reasonably priced. When my temporary expired I went back to them to get my "permanent" residency. This was two years ago. I have a copy of the aplication with...

That time of year ? Credit card crooks

This is just a FYI heads up. Did my monthly shopping at La Sarina In Santo Domingo last Thursday. Used my Capitol one card as usual. What was a little unusual is, for the first time, one of the managers said I didn't have to give them my cedula to copy. Anyway, the card was cloned and there were...
