President Leonel Fernandez is expected in Bogot? tonight to continue with his efforts to mediate between Colombia and Venezuela. Fernandez?s is following up on mediation efforts following the meeting of the two in Mexico in February, during the Rio Summit when a peace-maker group of friend countries was formed. On Wednesday, President Fernande met with Colombia Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez in Santo Domingo, and the trip to Colombia was coordinated. President Fernandez is scheduled to meet with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe Friday night at 8pm at the Casa de Narino, as reported in Colombia newspaper, El Tiempo. Fernandez is scheduled to spend the evening in Bogota and next day hold meetings with Colombian businessmen. Then he will continue on to Venezuela, for meetings with President Hugo Chavez and businessmen, as reported in El Tiempo.
Relations between both countries soured especially after in August 2009 Colombia signed an agreement that allows the US to use Colombian military bases and civilian airports for combating drug trafficking and terrorism in the region.

Presidente leonel should be taking care of the problems in his own country better than that, look the attitude of Chavez now against the purchases of REFIDONSA and the reduction in the amount of oil to be billed to DR in the next years.

I would imagne the LF is there to get the kickbacks from the car deal and the deal to build 18,000 houses in the DR with Colombian financing...and there was something else??? So many deals by Lockward....can't keep track of them...

Of course he wants to be the first Dominican to get a Nobel for Peace...

Today's NY Times does not mention him in their item about Hillary in Guatemala...gee...

If he we're appointed to some international position that would be a type of mixed blessing since that would get him OUT of the Dominican political scene. Yet then, WHO would succeed him. The PLD has the infrastructure to win, however they would fall apart as a result of the internal squabbles that affect all the big parties. It's too bad, Troncoso seems to be a better administrator and he might even be a better president. Leonel in the UN would be like a fish in the water, and yes would even qualify for a Nobel. For a true alternative in the DR Guillermo Moreno is going to be the best bet. I don't like politics, but I do find it entertaining :)

I found that interesting. Apparently Chavez and Uribe are giving El Presidente photo ops to help with his problems back home. Nobody else in the World is publishing this.

Colombia and Venezuela are so economically interdependent that any noise about policy rift is an act played for a specific audience (US Congress) to keep the cash flowing to Colombia. At least some of that "interdiction" money is going toward infrastructure improvements and the residents' standard of living.

Did someone announce this mediation effort a little ...............peremptorily? :cheeky: Reading between the lines here 'Asimismo, el gobierno dominicano aclar? que por diversas v?as ha intentado realizar una comunicaci?n directa con las autoridades venezolanas, con el prop?sito de ponerles en conocimiento de la metodolog?a de trabajo y las acciones a ser emprendidas para lograr el objetivo de paz entre ambas naciones, ?pero desafortunadamente, no obtuvimos respuesta a esos esfuerzos de establecer un v?nculo directo".'

Desafortunadamente indeed but shouldn't they have waited until the mediation offer was accepted before going public? Kudos to Huchi Lora, btw, sick in the clinic, visited by President, asks the question and phones the response in to his own programme:
LF asegura Ch?vez estuvo de acuerdo con mediaci?n

Meanwhile, guess who Chavez has appointed head of the political council of PetroCaribe :)

You might not like Chavez but he does understand the game.
