My family and I have just begun our year of living in Santo Domingo. Our first stop was HOTEL CONDO PARQUE, on Palo Hincado, a couple blocks down from el conde. If you're looking for a cheap place to stay, go here....nothing luxurious, but clean, chill, cheap, and with extremely helpful staff.
The owners (an ex-pat and a Dominicana) took a lot of time out to help us get acquainted and find an apartment. They even saved us from getting screwed once or twice (when many others in their position probably would have exploited us themselves).
Anyway, if you're looking for a place to crash before you get established, google these guys.
