any bets how long it's gonna take before half the chairs are stolen and/or destroyed?

Have you been to Plaza Juan Baron on the malecon? That plaza is nicer today than the day it opened. You need to get out more and stop spending so much time being critical of this country.

That doesn't make sense, you're wearing yourself down putting so much energy into finding fault everywhere.
Day by day, post by post your opinion becomes less and less significant as it appears you don't know anything positive or worthwhile of the DR. If your experience is full of nothing but negativity and remorse have you considered that the country can not offer you anything and you would be better off elsewhere?
I think most people would agree, if their life experiences were as negative and outright miserable as yours they would seek to change whatever it was they were doing wrong to have such a view of the world, and heaven knows you are doing something wrong somewhere if it only makes you happy to look at life in such a depressive state.
You're only making yourself look silly by optionally living somewhere you obviously have no liking for, and certainly have nothing good to say about, that I have seen anyway.

Trust me, I'm not bothered by your opinion of my opinion :) thanks!

My point may come across negative but it's sadly true. I was having cofee at my vecina's house the other day and she was showing me photos from her childhood in the 80's and 70s, of all the 'nice' places like mirador park, the malecon back then etc. all places now that are over run with garbage and destroyed.

the question is, roberto salcedo wants to win votes yes? wouldn't it be cheaper to just clean up all the nice old projects, instead of building flashy new ones that can be destroyed?

what's the point of building a nice beach front arrangement on the malecon, when the hotels on the malecon are throwing raw sewage into the same water?

anyways. thanks for your opinion :)

My guess is it's nicer because there are companies there selling stuff and keeping it clean so customers keep coming. If it was a plaza for nature lovers - you know, without tiendas - then it would be destroyed by now.

I was there the evening it opened, quite lovely. Very well lit as well. The Malecon still gets I think a somewhat bad rap for being unsafe for tourists at night. Some Dominicans and hotel workers still seem a little skiddish about safety there as well....which is too bad.

Of all the places, if tourists can not feel safe on the Malecon it does not bode well for the future of tourism in SD which is too bad. I guess what depresses me, and it may come under the heading of the Professionalism in the DR thread (which morphed into a grammar lesson); in the big scheme, putting a little window dressing and security (and maintaining it), on just the most important areas of SD, would generate substantial incremental tourism growth. The Zone, The Malecon, and one or two other areas, should be treated as jewels and ambassadors for the Capitol City.= if indeed tourism is so important to the country's economy.
Simple window dressing to create the draw...surely even the dysfunctional politicos running the show can manage this!? maybe not. regardless, I love the Malecon , but more for it's potential currently missed.

Santo Domingo is a city that lives with its back to the sea. The Malecon has been in shambles for years.

I'm so glad to see projects like this that help the city start looking towards it's beautiful positioning on the ocean.

I can't believe people are actually swimming there. As much as I do like the fact that at least they're spending some money in trying to clean up an eyesore, this little beach area has been remodeled in the past more times I can count and each time it doesn't take very long before is back to its liter strewn, junkie infested self, so I don't hold any hopes that this time will be different. It's just too bad that there's no follow up to projects like these...with some regular maintenance this could remain a nice space for families to visit.

Yeah, but it was a lot more fun before when all the vendors were there. Now it's just empty 90% of the time. They should have kept the vendors, organize them, charge them a fee and use that money to clean up and maintain the area.

These "Showcase" projects are like putting lipstick on a patient with terminal cancer!
They did a Park in my area a few years ago, today nothing is usable.
Mirador Sur is just the same.
Why not pick up the garbage that fills the streets?
Why not pave some mud roads?
Why Not?Why Not,Why Not??????????????????????????????????

LOL!!!

Expats arrived by the dozens after falling in love with the DR, then they want to change this and that... Until it looks like the place they left behind and all sudden they realize then they missed the "old" one better...

LOL!!
