How is IKEA and the furniture it sells holding up?

What is the long term prognosis for IKEA in Santo Domingo? Anybody know?

Anyone purchase any particle board furniture from them that is starting to fall apart?

I'm sure someone has. Wouldn't touch their junk if they gave it away. Not to mention the fire trap. Went to their store in Canada and wasn't confortable walking though the maze. It's suicidal in the DR.

I brought a bookcase and two office style tables when they first opened, still going strong.

As I said a long time ago, IKEA have been selling furniture in climates much worse than the DR for
a long time. You will find very few complaints about particle furniture falling apart, especially when you take into account they are the largest seller of furniture on the planet.

I actually think they are one of the better stores in the DR. Fire extinguishers, exit points, hydrants etc.

Even if they lose money, they'll stay open for a generation. Ikea is one of the world's biggest non-profit charity foundations (no joke) created as a tax dodge...

Perhaps, but I don't feel comfortable in that type of venue. I'll pass thank you.

Yes! That's the one! The one and only that solo employees walk about the empty isles!

CCCCCCCCCCCCCCC CCCCCCCC is about the other part of the folks like Donp, etc... whom will park their cars out in the DR sunny rays, instead of indoors parking...

Aaaaah! Nothing like a toasty seat to welcome you back to your car!

Right CCCCCCC?

I redecorated my living/dining room and guest room with their stuff 4 months ago and haven't regretted it yet. Free delivery to the east coast too. Wouldn't have been able to buy all the stuff I did + transportation for the amount I spent. Maybe it won't last as long as traditional furniture but I usually don't really like the stuff in this country so it sounded like a good deal to me!

I have bought some serious junk from them in Belgium, and some good stuff. I have to say their customer service in Belgium was always top notch. Any complaint got treated fairly and rapidly, No idea how it is here.

I also wonder how their kitchens (in Belgium nice and very good value) would last out here, being made out of plywood.

I am lenient towards them as I like their meatballs too much... lol

lol

I bought something there a few months ago, unpacked it at home and found that the plastic bag of connecting bits, screws etc., wasn't in the box. Called IKEA and told them they said bring the thing back so I did, although I told them all I needed was "the baggie with the bits", they said no...gotta bring it back. So I did, but it was too darn heavy to lift outa the jeep when I got there.....looked around for some help in the car park but none available. Went up to the help desk they said bring it up...I tried the "but all I need is the baggy thing...."....uh-uh. So I asked the help desk guy to find me someone to help and that took 30 minutes. When I got the box up the guy opened it and searched for a minute or so between the 8 parts in the box just to make sure that it was really missing, telling me that on many an occasion they actually find the allegedly missing bit in the box, that's why they insist on having you bring the box back. Then I had to wait another thirty minutes for them to find and bring another similar item out, but instead of giving me that one in exchange, they opened it took out the bag of bits and put it in my box, sending the other one back to the store, I guess for another happy customer to buy it, get it home, find the bag missing and then have to bring the box back from San Francisco de Macoris or wherever. I used to buy stuff occasionally at IKEA in my previous countries of residence and in all their stores they had a bar with all the connecting bits, screws, brackets and plugs free of charge so you could make up for shortages inside the packages which I guess there must have been or why else would they have a bit bar? When I asked the help desk guy about that, he pointed to an empty stand in the corner and said that they used to have a free bit-bar but people kept taking the bits, so they stopped it.
Customer Service Santo Domingo style......
BTW, I brought some small kitchen cabinets with me from IKEA in Rome some 6 or 7 years ago...they're still good.

Things have been going so bad, but sooooooooooooo bad for IKEA since they set open the doors to their first store in Dominican Republic and Latin America (according to the usual suspects here on DR1), that this second anniversary they're reducing the prices drastically in order to entice people to at least visit the huge and empty store (according to the same usual suspects here on DR1).

So bad it's that they have been forced to reduce the prices by as much as (GASP! Oh my God! That bad?)

It's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad, that they even extended the 10% cashback for one week!!!

OH LORD!!!

How can they afford to live by offering such drastic amount! 10% people! 10%!!!!
